I took the LSL about 3 weeks ago for my 1st long distance train trip. Went the other way Chicago->Springfield, MA. I was in a coach seat. $83 wasn't bad at all. About the only down side was the time it took from Albany to Springfield. Since it follows the Westfield River, it must run about 40 MPH. Really nice scenery in that area. In the summer I'm told it's like being surrounded by a green wall, but it was just past peak leaf season for me.
Took the trip because of an airline ticket confusion. I thought my friend made the reservation. Going out wasn't bad, but $600 to come back Sun night wasn't going to happen. I had non-rev standby out of O'Hare, but #67 on the standby list for an A319 also isn't going to happen.
Took the airport van to Union Station and had about 20 minutes to make the train. I didn't realize the subway runs between O'Hare and Union Station.
Overall, it was a comfortable trip. Reasonable food. It's nice having power for each seat for gadgets. I couldn't quite get a perfect sleeping position in the seat though. There seemed to always be some pressure point. Beats long distance coach seats on the airlines by a mile though.

Hi Dan,
I recently have moved to Albany and was searching about Amtrak Boston-Albany schedules, when I found your documentary on the "Lake Shore" route. You did a great job, congratulations!!
I love train trips too!! In 2005 I went on a 3-day trip from Boston to Emeryville-CA, which makes a stop in Chicago too. It was a nice adventure.
Best wishes!

Angela.
.
