This is a unique concept that until very recently was not published.  Wired Magazine was one of the first to report on it.  I have not done one myself, but every Fall it does cross my mind whether I can achieve a higher status on my perferred airline.  This year it looks like I will be about 14,000 miles short of qualifying for Gold status.  However that is quite a mileage run.
